Pēdējie Ziemassvētki DP nometnē. -- Last Christmas in the DP camp.
Šai bildes laikā, mēs nezinājām, lai gan cerējām, ka šie būs mūsu pēdējie Ziemassvētki kā dīpīšiem, Ventorfas DP caurbraukšanas nometnē. Gaidījām 1951. gada jauno Amerikas kongresu un cerējām ka atļaus bijušiem latviešu leģionāriem iebraukt ASV. Lai svinētu Ziemassvētkus un uzstādītu svētku eglīti mūsu mazā istabiņa gultas bija jāsakrauj kaudzē. 2003. gada septembrī, kad apceļoju kaŗa un dīpīšu laiku vietas Vācijā atradu, ka visas Ventorfas DP nometnes ēkas bija nojaukta un to vietā uzbūvētas dzīvokļu ēkas, izņemot ēka #5. Tā kā visas nometnes ēkas bija vienādas, tad palikušā piektā ēkā varēju atrast tādu pašu kā mūsu 1950. gada istabu. Istaba bija labā stāvoklī, krāsa neplīsa no sienām, logi bija jauni, bet tik maza, ka es nevarēju saprast kā mēs pieci pieauguši tur varējām nodzīvot veselu gadu.
At the time of this picture, we did not know, but were hoping, that these would be our last Christmas as DP’s (displaced persons) in the Wentorf DP transit camp. We anxiously were waiting for the new 1951 US congress to pass the law permitting ex Latvian Legion soldiers to enter USA. Our Christmas tree was fit into our small room by pilling the beds in one corner. In 2003, when I visited all of the places in Germany where I lived as a refugee and displaced person I stopped in Wentorf. The camp buildings, except for building #5 have been replaced with apartment buildings. Since the camp buildings all were identical, I was able to find the twin to our room in building #5. The room was in better shape than ours had been, no peeling paint and new windows, but I was amazed at the smallness, how could five grown people live in it for a year.

Edgars Zariņš jun. savas bēgļu un dīpīšu gaitas sāka 1944. gada 15. septembrī. Padomju Savienības armijai tuvojoties, mamma Alīde Zariņa (43) ar visiem trim dēliem Edgaru jun. (11), Silvestri (9) un Juri (7), atstāj vectēva saimniecību Limbažu pagastā un zirgu ratos devās uz Vāciju. Tēvs, Edgars sen. bija iesaukts latviešu leģionā. Pa to laiku Padomju Savienības armija iebruka Lietuvā līdz Baltijas jūrai un ar zirgiem varēja tikt tikai līdz Liepājai. No Latvijas izbrauca ar kuģi „Lapland”, atstājot Liepāju 1944. gada 15. oktobrī. Kaŗa laikā, kā bēgļi lēnām virzoties uz rietumiem tālāk prom no draudošās Padomju Savienības armijas tuvošanās, dzīvoja Stargrades (tagad Polijā), Frankfurtes (pie Oderas) bēgļu nometnes. Tiekot ārā no briesmīgās bēgļu nometnes uz trim mēnešiem nonāca Neibrandenburgā. 1945. gada februārī sekojot austrumu frontes sabrukšanai devās tālāk uz rietumiem nonākot Treias ciemā pie Šlezvigas (netālu no Dānijas). Kaŗa beigās, šeit ģimenei pievienojās tēvs Edgars sen. Edgars Zariņš jun. dzīvoja DP nometnes: Vēdelē 1946/47 kur pabeidz pamatskolu un latviešu ģimnāzijā Pinebergā 1947-1949, vēlāk latviešu techniskā ģimnāzijā Ferdenē (pie Aller upes) 1949/50. Par to laiku vecāki un brāļi no Vēdeles nometnes tika pārcelti uz Emdenes un Zenkvardenes DP nometnēm un beidzot nonāca Ventorfas DP nometnē, kur 1950. gada jūnija viņiem piebiedrojās Edgars jun. Visa ģimene iebrauc ASV 1951. gada 16. jūnijā, kad Amerikā sāka ielaist latviešu leģionārus. --- The refugee and DP (displaced person) story of Edgar Zarins Jr, who at the early age of 11 on September 15. 1944 left his grandfathers farm in Limbaži, in northern Latvia. The Soviet Red Army was advancing very rapidly, when mother Alide Zarins (43) put her three sons Edgar Jr, Sillvestris (9) and Juris (7) on a horse drawn wagon, loaded with essentials and decided to seek safety from the Soviets by escaping to Germany. Father Edgars Sr. had been drafted into the Latvian Legion of German Army. During the trip to the southwest Latvia the Soviet Army broke through and reached the Baltic Sea in Lithuania, thus cutting of overland route to Germany. Zarins family left Latvia, harbor of Liepāja, on October 15. 1944, aboard the German troop and wounded transport Lapland, and arrived in port of Danzig in Germany (now Gdansk in Poland). They were lucky, that as refugees, with every move they were able to relocate further west, away from the Soviet menace. First in refugee camps in Stargrad (now Szczecinski in Poland) and then Frankfurt by river Oder. Once released from the refugee camps they found a place in Neubrandenburg, but in spring of 1945 had to move even further west arriving in the small village of Treia in Schleswig-Holstein not far from Denmark. This is where they lived until the end of Second World War and return of father Edgars Sr. Their DP (displaced person) days started in May of 1946 in UNRRA DP camp Wedel, on bank of Elbe River 20 miles west of Hamburg. Edgar jr finished grade school and in 1947 moved to Latvian high school in DP camp Pinneberg (1947-1949) and continued his education in Latvian Technical high school in Ferden at the river Aller (1949/50). During that time the rest of Zarins family had been transferred from Wedel DP camp to Emden and then to Senkwarden and finally to Wentorf DP camps, where in May 1950 Edgar Jr rejoined them to wait for emigration to USA. Finally, in June 16. 1951, when USA admitted ex Latvian Legion soldiers the family arrived in New York aboard the US Liberty ship USS Gen Sturgis. | |||||||||||
